Which Format Should You Choose?

JPG is the universal choice for photographs. It compresses smoothly graded colors — skies, skin, landscapes — into very small files, and literally everything can open it. Its weaknesses: no transparency, and visible artifacts around sharp edges at low quality.

PNG is lossless and supports transparency, making it the right format for logos, screenshots, diagrams, and any graphic with text or hard edges. The trade-off is size: a photograph saved as PNG can be five to ten times larger than the same photo as a high-quality JPG.

WebP is the modern all-rounder. It typically produces files 25–35 percent smaller than equivalent JPGs, supports transparency like PNG, and is supported by every current browser. Its only practical drawback is that some older desktop applications and government upload forms still refuse it — which is exactly when you convert WebP back to JPG or PNG with this tool.

How the Converter Works

Honest Limitations

Conversion cannot increase quality. Turning a heavily compressed JPG into a PNG produces a larger file with exactly the same artifacts, because the damage was done when the JPG was first saved. Likewise, converting an animated GIF outputs only its first frame, since the canvas works with still images. For the best results, always convert from the highest-quality source you have, set quality to 80 or above for photographs, and use PNG only when you genuinely need transparency or pixel-perfect text.
